It's really hard to find a room with no wooden furnishings in it anywhere. And if you actually don't have any wood like furniture in your very own home, there's always basic white, just blends in with the white ceilings all of us have.

The ceiling hugger fans typically sit very close to the ceiling, as implied. But on a high speed, they can't suck in the air they require, so you might have this fan on high, and will not really feel as if you are getting as much air as you would from one hanging from a rod.

That all said, there are fans so completely different from traditional ceiling fans as to look really outrageous. They now have taken those types of fans, and mounted them (yes, more than one) to a rod from the ceiling so that while the blades turn, so do the electric fans. Rings a bell in my memory of a ride at the fair.
